Open Volunteer Position: Athletics Director – Harpers Ferry Highland Games
Organization: Harpers Ferry Celtic Culture Society (HFCCS)
Event: Harpers Ferry Highland Games
Location: Harpers Ferry, WV (Sam Michael’s Park)
Commitment: Volunteer / Part-Time (Seasonal Planning + Festival Weekend)
About the Role
The Athletics Director is a key leadership position within the Harpers Ferry Highland Games planning team. This volunteer will coordinate and oversee all athletic components of the Games, working directly with the Mid-Atlantic Scottish Athletics (MASA) and other community sports partners to ensure a smooth, engaging, and professional athletic experience for both competitors and attendees.
Primary Responsibilities
Coordinate Heavy Athletics
Serve as the liaison between HFCCS and MASA for all Scottish Heavy Athletics events.
Oversee setup, scheduling, and execution of athletic competitions.
Ensure proper field layout, safety measures, and event flow.
Manage Additional Sports Events
Plan and coordinate soccer and rugby tournaments in collaboration with regional teams and organizers.
Coordinate with Cricket clinic.
Equipment & Logistics
Oversee setup, of all sports-related equipment
Manage ordering and distribution of awards, medals, and trophies.
Interactive Activities
Ensure event safety for all athletics.
Collaboration & Reporting
Work closely with the HFCCS Board and Operations team to align with festival schedules and site planning.
Recruit and lead volunteer assistants for event setup and athletic area management.
Qualifications
Passion for Celtic culture, athletics, or community events.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Prior experience in event coordination, sports management, or coaching preferred but not required.
Must be available during the Harpers Ferry Highland Games weekend and for select planning meetings leading up to the event. (October 2 - 4th)
